Sub folders mixed with Galleries

If you have a folder with some sub folders and some galleries in you get the sub folders displayed first and separately from the galleries

In my legacy smugmug site I had done some trickery to redraw the pages to do my own collage portrait style - and as part of that i pulled in sub folders and galleries into a single view.

It would be great if this was an option - merging sub folders and galleries into the same view

The way I see it, i go to my 'travel' folder and get a list of all my trips, a handful of those were big trips that i broke down into multiple galleries, so they are in sub folders - but that doesn't mean I want them to stand out alone at the top of my Travel page, it just means when someone clicks into them they get another level before getting to the actual photos.

If you sort them automatically at least it will do that - from memory though in the 'organise' menu it shows the folders first, but when you look at the actual site it will be properly sorted - i've done that here where 'FEA' is another folder, the remainder are collections:

Hmm, interesting. Is that a standard folder page you get to through 'browse'? or is it a custom page you added something to?

When I look at folder pages in the customizer screen it has totally separate content blocks for folders, galleries and pages... and so in my top level folders i see my sub folders first then galleries - its not just the order, they are separate blocks.

I've not 'unveiled' so I can't show you

DOH! - I remember, I changed something else earlier on! :crazy

Under 'customise' - I went to 'all folders' - removed the 3 separate blocks for 'galleries', 'pages' and 'folders', and dragged in the component called (I think) 'Galleries Pages and Folders' - that combines all those into one content block on all your folder pages, once they are in one block then they are sortable.

Aha, yes of course.. I remember seeing that. Sounds exactly what I need.

First truly happy part of this 're-customising' of my site :)

Bit of a learning curve going on, but i'm kinda enjoying playing with it so far...

    ok, almost! but not quite

I now have folders and galleries in the same block... but some odd things are going on with ordering

in the organiser, after changing the sort method a few times to try things out, now both 'sort by added' and 'sort by modified' have oldest first. If i check in other folders that I have not touched yet they have 'sort by modified' selected and it is newest first!

There is no ascending/descending option in the organiser that I can see.

Then in the customise section, the options on the folder page component (folders/galleries/pages combo component) the sort by added and sort by modified dont mix in the sub folders with the galleries. The 'use organiser order' option looks like it does it, but unfortunately as mentioned, the order is oldest first in the organiser!

The ascending / descending option is just to the right of the sort specification.

Aha. Brilliant. Because this has always been a problem in legacy SM, I never thought to see if this could now work in the new SM.

I like this. I have lots of situations where this will be desirable. I will have to try it out.

Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

Ah thanks. Didn't spot that - it just says 9-1 (or 1-9 now I have toggled it) not really a common way of indicating sort direction

I'm still not sure mine is doing it right - could you check and confirm what sort you have set in the organiser and what sort you have set in the customiser please?

I have organiser: sort by modified, and customiser: sort by organiser - and my two sub folders are at the end now

Hmmmm. Unfortunately it looks like I cannot manually sort a folder into the middle of a set of galleries.

In other words, I can't get it manually to: galleryA galleryB folder1 galleryC folder2

    Bummer.

I've just tried it and I think you're right, it will sort automatically but not manually. I think I'd raise a query on that as if it works on the auto sorts you'd presume it should be feasible to do it manually too, it might just be a detail that got overlooked?

Ref the 1-9/9-1, I think it changes depending on what your folders are called, the one I linked to above says A-Z/Z-A, do your folders have a number at the start of their name?

Just guessing from your description in the OP, but would the folders have a date at the start of the name? If that's the case, I tend to tweak the dates to let them be sorted correctly by name - as here: http://ukrailwaypics.smugmug.com/Daybyday/2013 - Might be a workaround until they get to the issue?

Thanks for reassuring me that I'm not crazy. Well, I may be crazy but at least my observation that the folders and galleries cannot be manually sorted is valid.

The folders and galleries have descriptive names. I suppose I could work around the limitation by renaming everything with a date and sorting automatically. Not ideal. But might be workable.

What I've done for now is have everything at the same level as a folder, with galleries within. I had to create folders artificially and move a bunch of galleries to them, but it doesn't look too bad. It does cause an extra click for viewers to get to the gallery they want to see though. And it doesn't lend itself to browsing.

I'll think about your suggestion. Maybe play around.

Thanks for your thoughts Gloriousnse. I appreciate your time.

I totally agree. I'm going crazy over this. I cannot have all galleries in folders, the same extra click problem comes up. I need to get them manually organised like GaryBakker said: galleryA galleryB folder1 galleryC folder2
Does anyone know, where I could vote/suggest this, because one of the links above isn't exactly reffering to that specific topic.. or maybe my english is just so bad. I couldn't find that topic in suggesting site. Is it possible, that noone has suggested it yet?

    Not only possible, but likely.

I had made my post before the suggestion system was fully operational, so unless someone else in this thread took care of that, it wasn't done.
