I Propose an Experiment

Let's use this thread for a really weird purpose, visceral reaction to an overall image.

We all often get inconsistent comments on stuff we post.

For example: "I hate that arm/that arm looks great, the light is flat/there's too much falloff, etc."

How about posting ONE IMAGE and comments are limited to: "I like this" or "I don't".

It's easy and fun to play. I'll start us off.

Like this or Don't like this??

A man after my own heart. A lot, well most the critic's simply confuse me. No idea what they are talking about, I either like a photo, think it might be better if cropped or I don't like it. I've seem to many photo's that I though were great that really got it from the critic's. I think what's being measured is no so much the photo but the way it is post processed.

I think the reason people offer such picky comments is because there's so many great photographers on here. On a gut level, I would say "like" to everything posted except for Dog #2. :)

Ok, I lose. I can't make it through the experiment without explaining my likes/dislikes ne_nau.gif

One of the main reasons I read DGrin and occasionally post images is to learn from what others post as critiques. I don't always agree but appreciate the comments.

So ... I like the girl pose and composition but it lacks contrast or has flat lighting. The sky is bland as well. Dog 1 rocks. Dog 2 not so much (lost in the background). Bryce image is great but something could be done to help differentiate between the background and guy (not necessarily out of focus). Sam photo is cool but busy background takes away focus from main subject. Don could use some contrast.

Phew ... there ... got that out of my system.eek7.gif They may not be the best critiques but, for what it's worth, I've given them. Please feel free to let me know how I could make my photo better.thumb.gif

    Sorry I failed the experiment.:D

This gets logistically more difficult as there are more pics to acknowledge! I'm using POST numbers.

    1 No
    2a Yes
    2b No
    5 Yes
    8 Yes
    10 Yes/maybe
    12 No
    17 Yes

This is an interesting experiment - and I would agree that we all get waayyyyy too hyperfocused on things that nobody but another photographer would ever notice - BUT since we are photographers talking about it... they become important. That said, many great photos fall into the "the whole is more than the sum of the parts" category, and it is nice to think that way once in a while :)

    PS
Visceral responses above; I have qualifying explanations for all of them which take some of those no's to "fix this and it would be a 'yes'" rolleyes1.gif

I've been out of town :D

Duuuddeee.... how else do we get better if we don't analyze our work? I credit nits and crits from dgrinners with taking me from interested snapshooter to something more - I NEVER would have moved beyond that without folks like Scott Quier, Jeffreaux, Heatherfeather, Charles, Dogwood and a bunch of others taking me to task over things I'd never even noticed. Besides, I've spent much of my career (musical) giving or receiving C&C, so it's just a way of life; if people ask me for an opinion, I will offer it lol

(DLS, I just don't like the background - smooth it in post so the paper bumps don't show, and/or darken it a bit. I just find the background too "present", and since as a plain grey background it doesn't have anything to "add" to the shot, make it as neutral/transparent as possible. Just my 2c - other people may think differently!)

Diva, you know I like CC as much as anyone. I just thought it might be interesting to get a macro reaction for one thread.

Feel free to tweak me about bent wrists or scrunched toes in anything else I do.rolleyes1.gif

And, of course, our ever present bkg argument.
