Featured Image - Random not supported?

In the past if you didn't set a featured image, it would appear to pick a random one. That's how I left many galleries, it was nice to see fresh content every time you went through a gallery or folder list.

In the new one it appears (if you had none set) the first image in each gallery becomes the feature. If you clear it (which it lets you do), it just comes right back.

I'm interesting in this. I'd like to know if there's a way to do it.

A feature request for this was filed last August, in the thread Random Thumbnails.

We know it's not possible now - will it ever be possible? That feature in legacy helped keep sites looking fresh.
