Watermarks and the New Smugmug look bad..

I will first say that I am posting on the Pro Sales Support because I am a Pro Member and this issue has never been raised about the NEW SMUGMuG ... I have watched webinar after webinar, read the help pages not seen this issue... I am primarily an Action Photographer that has to watermark images, all of the demo sites are Landscape type images.. i Watermark 99% of my images and they really don't look nice in the new themes with the big squares and such.. The Watermark is how I protect my images and before they did not show up the the preview of Categories or subcategories... My top level folders are showing this and it disturbs me.. It looks bad, my watermark has evolved to what it has to protect my images, Google+ hangout show BS about watermarking aside I have legitimate reason to do so... Anyone else feel that the new designs did not take into account watermarking and actually if you do make your site look bad? I sure feel that it was the case...

Thanks

Right now, this is a gripe of mine as well. I'd love a way to have the thumbnails on my gallery page not to have watermarks. I realize that I could upload a non-watermarked image into each gallery and use that as the "featured image", but that would take forever. Is there an easy way around this?

I agree with the above. It has bugged me too, and I have not found a way to un_watermark in the new smugmug either. I think it is leaving us really volnurable.

I know how to unwatermark but I don't want them showing in the folders portion of my site they didn't in the categories section on Legacy... Can we get someone for SMUGMUG to comment?? Please?? I don't shoot landscapes or architecture... We need to find the happy medium...

I agree that this is a problem. Watermarks show on folders on the home and "browse" pages, and even on the thumbnails when you choose the Thumbnail gallery style, making that style unusable because the watermarks are ugly and relatively unnecessary on tiny images. For small/thumbnail copies used to direct the user to larger versions of our images, we need the option of removing the watermark. It's not good for professionals to have to choose between unsightly presentation and lack of protection.

I too am chagrined about this. What I've done as a stop gap until it can be addressed was to create a featured photos folder for my homepage, and a new low opacity water mark with my URL at the bottom and large initials in the middle. Restrict that folder to a max display size of large. It's no replacement for needing to have watermark free thumbs, but for myself I was able to strike a balance between image safety and thumb ugliness.

I think the issue is that these aren't "Thumbs" in the sense of legacy SM thumbs... these are actual display copies (Med, Large, XL, etc) and you have those set to be watermarked. I don't know of a way, short of SM doing some more engineering do make those images display without watermarks, and still have your images watermarked. Well, actually one thing you can do is upload one photo to each gallery, that is < 800px on the long side. Then feature that photo, and you'll have watermark-free gallery blocks....

How it works on the back end isn't our problem. Smugmug recognized that watermarks on thumbnails don't look good and they gave us the option to not watermark thumbnails. Now with new smugmug, the thumbnails just got bigger. Same deal applies. Smugmug needs to figure out how to continue to give us that option.

    Andy,

I thank you for your reply but somehow something that was not broken in SM 1.0 that is now broken.. I really do like the 2.0 and unveiled so that I was not making the engineers fix legacy issues. The amount of galleries and folders I have seem to be causing problems for every bug I report.. Watermarks and Smart Galleries are still big issues for me.. I have multiple reports in WM issues and will be reporting SMartgalleries next week from what I can tell...

    Thanks..

Well David - I'm just trying to give you an easy solution to the issue for now. It's pretty simple, just upload a small image, don't watermark it, and feature it. I bet SM will figure something out in the future. Hope this helps.
