How Should Lightroom Sync Work?

I am a happy user of Lightroom and Smugmug, and I have a question about the intended/expected use of LR and the new Smugmug.

Now that we can manage pictures and folders effectively on Smugmug, how are the sync and publish functionality of the Lightroom plugin supposed to work?

For example, if I move folders and galleries around on SM, is the expectation that I'll then sync the hierarchy, and have the updates replicated in LR? Suppose I move pictures between galleries - then I presume I would need to sync pictures as well, right?

Or is it expected that if I use LR to manage a folder hierarchy on SM, then I won't (re)organize anything in that hierarchy on SM?

Thanks!

David

I advice you be very careful with this. Right now if you move images outside of Lightroom, Lightroom does not seem to lose the link but keeps it in the old folder. republishing the image in the old folder appears to chance the image even though it is in a different gallery on smugmug. When you resync however, it loses the connection to the file and makes a new link in the new folder. Also be aware of a MAJOR bug when you are using smart galleries or collected images (i.e. virtual copies). Lightroom links them as if they are different images on smugmug which generates a possibly destructive but at least very confusing situation. Also, syncing seems to get really easily confused right now and when yu sync images in a gallery, you get lots of conflicts to resolve with really strange choices for options such as images that just happen to have the same name but have completely different size, date, etc. The plugin is rather fickle at the moment which is not that surprising because of the smugmug updates.

Agreed! I believe that the safest approach is to start by finding out how the SmugMug folks intend this to work. Then I'll test it cautiously. With new software, it's always safest to to stay closest to the expected use cases. That's why I'm asking what they are.

I totally agree! I have now "unveiled" my site, run Windows 7 and Lightroom 5, and will participate in testing. I've used the plugin very successfully on the old SmugMug.

In Legacy I had a category called Travel. Under Travel I had many sub categories. One was United States and the other one was Out West Trip 1973. I wanted the Out West Trip to be under United States. Couldn't do that with Legacy. In the new SM I went to the Organizer and drug the Out West Folder and placed it under United Sates. Worked fine and none of my links from my blog broke and JF SmugMug plugin was able to still sync to the galleries. Jeffrey's plugin is one way from LR to SM. In LR the folder structure remains the same and doesn't match SM. That seems to indicate that moving galleries and folders doesn't change the actual address of each gallery of pictures. So you have a structure that is virtual. Of course right now that is what I am guessing and haven't done a lot of testing.

I'd really like to do some significant reorganization and redesign, taking advantage of the new features, but don't feel I can start until I have a better idea of how the LR plugin is designed to interact with this.

I'm running Windows 8 and Lightroom 5. I downloaded the updated Smugmug Plugin to Lightroom and now nothing works. Lightroom won't upload to Smugmug. I've checked all my settings and they appear fine. Any idea on how to fix this issue?

Was this working before the updates? If so, try syncing your hierarchy. That seemed to help me.
