Hi there,

Though the new smugmug is great, I am really struggling with it. I am in the sandbox, so I've migrated but not unveiled. I chose the Isis Design, and then selected the slate theme (which BTW I don't understand the difference between design and theme but that's neither here nor there). Anyways, when I created an About Me page, and added some hyperlinks to the text, the hyperlinks were totally unreadable bc there was virtually no contrast with the background. I want to keep the textured slate background but just make the text readable. How on earth do I do that? Every time I select "Create custom theme" I lose the cool textured background. Please help, thanks!
Thanks,

J.Girard

Did you choose a text color when you selecting a theme? If not, the default colors should provide you a nice contrast for the hyperlinks. If you've chosen a background that doesn't work well with the text colors, you can change them. From the "Edit Theme" menu, select "Accent Color" then select color that shows up better within your theme.

    Does that help you?

If you need some more help, please update this thread.

Where is the 'edit theme' menu????

Choose "Customize Site". You'll see a menu on the right or left side of the page. Select "Theme" which shows the Active Theme along with a choice of others should you decide to change later.

Select your theme from the "Active Theme" menu then click on the "wrench". This will bring up the "Edit Theme" dialog box.

Does that get you to the correct spot?

So I followed all your instructions but when I see my current theme (Slate) under "Active theme" there is no wrench to click on. I even tried this in another browser. The only option I have is the 'x' to delete the theme. Am I going crazy?

True, but Basic users should have the facility to change fonts, in the feature list the "Pick your own fonts and color combination" is ticked for all account levels... just like (not) adding menu bars, eh?

TBH, I'm beginning to think that these feature-teaser denials for Basic users are part of a cynical plan to get them to stump up another 20 bucks for the upgrade to Power.

it's only $20 a year extra, and you also get rightclick protection and your own domain name as well as the themes facilities. God, I'm starting to sound like a salesman and I've had enough of those this past week with car salesmen :gun2

I am a pro user... I finally had to change my background to a boring, basic color so that the hyperlinks on my 'about me' page would actually be readable. So frustrating!!! Any other thoughts?

You can definitely change the accent color of the links using the instructions I gave you.

    What didn't work?

But the problem is that I never get the 'wrench.' It simply isn't there. I assume it should be next to the "x" where you can remove the theme, but I have no other options. I can create a new theme but as soon as I select that option, I see the background all goes black and I lose everything- not just the font colors, but the background too.

    So, there is no wrench...

I just tried this. I selected 'slate' as you did, and I do not get the wrench. If (with slate selected) I try to add a new theme it reverts to the standard colours and I lose the slate backdrop - which I presume is what you want to keep.

When you select 'design themes' what is listed, and do you have a wrench there? Mine lists 'Dina' which was the original one I started with, and it does have a wrench. Can you not edit your design theme (did you say it was Isis?) leaving the background image as is, but change the font colours, then apply that theme to the whole site? You should be able to do that... I think. eek7.gif

You are indeed correct. My apologies.

You actually cannot edit the theme you have chosen, since it was a SmugMug created theme. You can create a NEW theme and make it similar to the one you have chosen (gray theme).

The hyperlink colors are using the accent color in the themes.

For what it is worth, I think you should be able to edit these themes, and have submitted this request to my product department.

    I apologize for the inconvenience!

But Michael, surely you CAN edit the SM themes, you just have to give them a new name. I just tried it. I tried to edit 'dina' which was the theme I started with a few days ago, and as soon as I made some changes and tried to click DONE I was prompted to give it a new name. Had I done so I could have applied that new theme to all or whatever part of my site I wished - yes?

All the OP wants to do is start off with ISIS/slate to get the background image. I presume she did that because she doesn't have a similar image of her own to use. If she edits the 'design theme' (which I presume says ISIS) she should be able to do what I just did. It is a bit confusing. I should think new smuggers would find it a bit of a challenge.

    Michael, Rob, and Ian-

Thanks all for your suggestions. To try and answer your questions- I went to "available themes" and then 'design themes" per Rob's suggestion, it says Zoe (the latest design I chose) and yes, I do have a wrench there! HOWEVER, as soon as I click on it, the background changes back to the original Zoe background, which is white- ARGGHH!!! The latest design I just stuck with was Zoe but with a regular gray theme (found under colors, not Slate, which was under textures).

This is frustrating and it should be easier. Per Michael's suggestion, I did consider creating a new theme from scratch, but that just seemed to defeat the purpose of having presets, and also, I didn't have the slate background to use (or a similar picture).

Anyways, glad to know I am not going crazy! And thank you Michael for suggesting this for product development. It seems a bit silly to advertise the new smugmug as super customizable when in fact it isn't yet. I still love a lot of new features but not this one!

    Thanks guys!

Strange. I just tried converting to Zoe, then edit the Theme changing the color and accent color (be sure to click on the "check" mark!). It worked for me. Is that how you did it?

Either way, I'm glad to see you've got a design working for you!

J (sorry, what is your name?)

Not sure about this first bit (perhaps a staff can confirm) When you initially select a theme to base your site on it becomes the design theme. From which... you create your own themes by saving as a new name.

I am sure about this bit though.

You can use your own saved theme for the entire site. Or, you can create multiple other themes and apply them to different parts of the site - one for homepage, another for galleries etc. You probably don't want to do that normally as you may lose consistency of appearance. So one theme of your own may be sufficient. Have a look at my screen below. I started with the dina theme, and it's still there in design themes. But I have created another called rob1 (from the original dina theme) which I have applied to my homepage. Ignore the fact you can't see the wrenches, that's just because my screen grab tool can't show hover over options with my mouse (they ARE there).

If I select dina my homepage screen would change to the dina theme - which I have not modified I just edited it and saved the result as Rob1. So... it would revert to the original dina colours - white (yuk!). Yours is doing the same. If you want to apply certain changes to a page, or the whole site, or whatever, you have to select a theme. If you don't have a theme that suits you you need to create one either from the original (like dina) or from another one of your own that you previously created.

The bottom line! You don't alter the SM themes, but you can edit them and save them as a new theme with a name of your choice. Once you have put a new name in the edit of the SM theme it will save it in your 'my themes' and it will revert the SM theme to it's original settings. The SM theme stays the same - which is why Zoe is reverting your page back to those screwy colours you don't like. Think of it like a RAW file in your camera. You never change the contents of the RAW you just adjust the parameters in Photoshop RAW editor and create something new - a JPEG or TIFF.

    Any help?

EDIT: Note Michael's comment after this about his request to make the original themes editable. But you can't do it at present.

    Well Yes...and no headscratch.gif

The default theme is editable, but the other premade themes in the menu are not. That is why it won't let her edit. She selected a pre-made theme that wasn't her default theme that came in the design.

I have submitted the request to edit those themes to the product managers

Just had another thought.... You seem keen on that slate background, even if you don't like other things in the theme. But the slate is not like a solid colour that you can choose anywhere - it's obviously an image that SM have and you don't have access to apart from in their theme. So, what you will have to do is start with a theme that has the slate image and change other things you don't like about the theme then save it as girard1 or something, then apply that to your site. I think that will work.headscratch.gif

I really appreciate everyone's help here! I wish SM had a video tutorial on this (though maybe they do, to be fair, and I just haven't found it). It can be tricky when explaining all this in text.

Rob- thank you for the screenshot and such a detailed response. I think I just need to continue to play with it. But where is it that you are going to save the name, after you select the design?

Also, you said I should start with a theme that has the slate image and change other things- I think that's what I originally tried to do, but couldn't seem to make those other changes.

Anyways I'll continue playing around with it and I'll let you all know if I'm successful- thanks again!
