Add a menu bar?

This should be simple but I can't suss how to do this. Too tired, utterly frustrated and terminally-baffled, I suppose. The Features List says I should be able to do this even with my Basic account.

All help appreciated.

To add a menu bar, go into Site Customization. on the Nav bar to the right, scroll down to the Add Content block section. Under Navigation, there is a content block for Menu. Drag and drop it to your page. Then, click the wrench to customize the settings. Hope that helps!

They have made the block for adding links so small and every link you add is at the bottom. If you
have a lot of drops you'll be scrolling forever dragging it up to its placement place. I'd suggest
writing it out first somewhere so you can add them in order and not have to drag them.

Nope, I don't get that. Under "Customize" I get "Just This Page" and "Site-Wide Theme":

In the "Just This Page" I get "Add Content Blocks" but no "Menu Bar" block option therein:

Are you saying that the 4 options available for drag&drop are Menus? If so, it's loose terminology and they're not what I'm looking for. I'm looking to add a Menu Bar, not a block of images. To me, a menu is something that I pick up, choose from and then put aside, a bar something akin to what drops down when clicking on "Customize". In a restaurant if I ask for the menu, the waiter brings me a book of lists of dishes, not a selection of dishes to choose from!

    Thanks anyway.

Are you on 'entire site' when in customization?

If you want a pull down menu from the bar you have to 'include folder content' in the options. See mine. If you want the summary page of all galleries just click 'images' when you get the drop down list. http://www.macromeister.co.uk/Images

No, I'm on "Just This Page".

I don't see "entire site". As per my first pic above, I see "Just This Page" and "Site-Wide Theme"

In "Site-Wide Theme" I see "Active Theme" and "Available Themes" which I can choose and apply but there's no "add menu" option anywhere in "Site-Wide Theme".

Go to your homepage (not in customization) and select CUSTOMIZE/CUSTOMIZE SITE That should give you something like the screenshot below. Click on 'Entire site' and you should get a different set of options. If unlike me, you haven't already added a menu then it won't show. In which case you need to go down to 'add content blocs' and add NAVIGATION/MENU and add it, as Sarah said at the top. Can you see that?

    I get nothing like that.

I tell you what, how about I send you my login details and let you have a look for yourself? I assume that I can trust you to not make permanent changes or unveil the thing.

    Got it (them) and replied.

I think the confusion is because the "Customize" facility for Basic accounts is different to that which applies to the other account levels.

That said, the Features List page still says that even Basic account holders such as me can "Easily add slideshows, menu bars, and more anywhere on the page". From my experiences, that's not true.

Thanks to everybody that's helped so far.

    Unfortunately I'm no further forward.

Any other takers for this one?

I'd suggest sending this to the help desk to see if they can help you out. I don't know what the differences are for the basic vs. power accounts, but if it says you should be able to add menu bars, it seems like it should be possible! On my screen, the "Menu" drag & drop is under "Navigation", under "Content Blocks". But, from your screen shot, I can see that it isn't there. It could be a bug, which is why it might be a good idea to email the help desk. Sorry I can't be of more help!

    Here's my screen:

    Too late!

SM Hero "Doc" has replied by email.

    Guess what...

    It can't be done.

    He says:
The New SmugMug for Basic users offers the ability to add some of our content blocks to the homepage, change colors, and themes etc. Advanced customizations such as the menu bars etc are Power and Higher accounts. I will let our marketing team know that the features list needs to be updated to reflect this. Thanks for letting us know it is incorrect.
    All the best,

    --Doc

So, yet another example of a feature-teaser denial for us Basic users I've stated elsewhere that I'm beginning to think it's all part of a cynical plan to get us to stump up another 20 bucks for the upgrade to Power.

Two bottles of wine a year, or two cinema tickets a year, or a book a year, perhaps 4 pints of beer a year, or two gallons of diesel... any more suggestions?rolleyes1.gif

While not wanting to appear ungrateful for your generosity, Michael, I must point out that a) it won't fix the cause of the problem, and b) there are many more Basic account holders out there who may be struggling with the same or similar issues - will you afford them the same courtesy?

Would that be the 'basic' left hook, or perhaps the 'power' left hook? Just asking...rolleyes1.gif

So, I've actually got two pages. One for me (www.bednarczykphotography.com) and another for my wife (tomandjenny.smugmug.com). The latter is a Basic while mine is a Portfolio. I, of course, upgraded mine first and then spent an hour trying to figure out why I couldn't do the same for my wifes. Wasn't until I found this post that I got my answer. And, as you've stated, you'll upgrade anyone's account to Power the following day. However, what you don't say is whether it's a courtesy lifetime upgrade or an upgrade that I'll eventually be paying for. I'm just looking to have the ability to add a menu as well but don't want to spend the extra $20/year just for that.

    Thanks,
    Tom

For others that find this post, I was told that I did not respond to the post fast enough because the change has been made to the features page. Mind you, I've been a member of Smugmug for going on 8 years. I'd hope that functionality like this would be grandfathered at a minimum. Don't upgrade my account but at least give Basic subscribers the ability to create menus.
