Quick Question About Keywords

This isn't a problem, or issue, or anything like that. I just have a quick question about keywords.

On Legacy the keywords were visible under each photo. If you hid them then Google would apparently not index them. I always hated having them in site to be honest, but understood how google crawled things, so left them visible.

On my new site I use those collages to display my gallery view, and when I click on an image it opens into the lightbox. If I have a description I can see it in the little bar at the bottom of the page. Cool. What I don't see are all the keywords. Now I know they work on the site as I can do searches by keywords.

All I want to know is this, are they no longer viewable by my visitors, and how will this affect Google's indexing? For me, I'd like them to not be viewable by visitors, and still be Google friendly.

I can't seem to find any sort of documentation on this.

My understanding from using other website providers is that Google does not look at the page for the keywords, it looks inside the image container for the MetaData.
