default date range on /date page should default to current year

When I bring up the /date page on my site the default date range is filled in with the earliest year for which I have photos - and with the from and to dates having the same values. It seems a bit silly to default to the oldest photos on my site rather than the photos I want my viewers to be looking at, the newest photos.

I'd like to see the default be in the current year, with the from set to January 1st of the current year and the to set to the current date. No one should need to make a change to the options to see the most current photos.

I spent a couple hours yesterday looking thru the code for where these values are set and had no luck.
I would suggest auto inputting the last 2 or three months so the first of the year would work.
