Featured Event Featured Image

I have been using a manually done HTML list to list all of the events for my clients to find theirs. But I've been messing with the new SM and have thought about switching to the featured events instead. Is there any way to get an image to show up instead of the blank box? That was what was holding me back in the old SM, so I'd love to find a way to make something show up there.

I have been back and forth with the smugmug help desk and this is a known issue that they are working on. However no schedule as to when it will be fixed.

1.5 years later and there doesn't seem to be any movement on this. What are folks doing for sharing their events since I feel like I'm in the minority to be using the featured event content block? Or are people just not looking at their public side without being logged in?
