What is a breadcrumb?

Breadcrumbs seem to be important concepts in SmugMug, but I have no idea what they are. Could someone please explain?

    The breadcrumb is a navigation aid. It identifies the page that is being viewed and allows the viewer to click to different locations.

    I've included a screen shot from one of my galleries with the breadcrumb highlighted in yellow. The title of the gallery is Rebuilding a bridge, Portsomouth - Kittery. This gallery is in a folder named Coastal Glimpses. Clicking on Coastal glimpses will take the viewer to that folder. Clicking on the home icon will take the viewer to the home page.
