Smart Galleries Not Updating Even WIth the usual Tricks

As many know, Smart Galleries do not always update automatically just because you add new photos to the site that fit the gallery criteria. You usually have to go to the Gallery smart settings and resave them for the gallery to repopulate. Well, that's not working for me today. I realized that images were missing from a smart gallery, so I made sure they had the necessary keyword, then went to the gallery and re-saved the smart settings and nothing happened. That was this morning. Since then, on and off over the course of the day I have tried:
  • removing, saving, and then re-adding the keyword to the relevant images
  • adding the keyword to different photos that don't belong in the gallery, just as a test, and they do not appear even after re-saving the smart gallery settings
  • waiting a few hours after adding the keyword to an image to see if it takes a while for the database to repopulate
  • deleting the keyword from images that are in the smart gallery, and they do not get removed even after resaving the settings
  • deleting the gallery and recreating it from scratch using the same keyword and it repopulates with the same images from this morning even after I added the keyword to new images and deleted it from some images that had it this morning.
Nothing is working. How in the world does a brand new smart gallery populate itself based upon keywords that were there 10 hours ago but not there now, and vice versa? Help, please. Thanks.

It's looking like it might take something like 24 hours or at least overnight for the images to refresh after changing the keywords. On the plus side, this happened without further meddling on my part, and did not require a forced refresh by re-saving the smart settings.
