Multiple Image box behavior not consistent.

I use a multiple image box with collage landscape layout on my smugmug start page (http://images.afximages.com).
I use a fixed with column layout of the home page.
But the box displays the last line inconsistently. Sometimes there is only one big image using half of the box width, sometimes the display of the thumbs fits and sometimes there is a gap, see screenshot.
Looks like the algorithm needs some work....
