Where do I start?

I've been on holiday since the new Smugmug was released and I'm really excited by what I'm seeing with sites converted to the new designs, BUT where the heck do I start?
I've got quite a bit of customization but haven't touched my existing site for about a year and can't remember all the different things I did with help from this forum.
What steps should I take, if any, before switching to a new design ? Which is the simplest design to use?
I've spent some time playing around but the customization on my home page doesn't work with any so what do I do with it......
Any help much appreciated:)

First, it appears you will need to wait a few days per Baldy's message Pausing migrations.
There are some new help pages and videos to help with getting started, linked from http://help.smugmug.com/. There is a link to a recording of an introductory webinar on this page - http://news.smugmug.com/2013/07/31/need-help-on-smugmug-join-us-online-tonight-and-tomorrow/.
I just looked at your site and I think the migration should be pretty straightforward.
I've bookmarked a few pages that you might find useful:
- Useful customization links
- Smugocity - Customization Toolbox
- Frequently Requested Simple Modifications / Tweaks

Ditto to Denise's post (and thanks to Rob A. for posting those great links as well).
Additionally, I don't know which, if any, of the themes are necessarily easier to work with. I played around with about four of them before deciding on mine, but I just liked the way it looked best.
The tricky stuff will be if you want to plug in some CSS codes. That's where I ran into some pretty big bumps in the road. But the CSS wizards on the Dgrin forums have been HUGELY helpful.
I'd bookmark the pages that Denise posted. Also, take a look at the video archives of the webcasts they did. You can pick up some tips there, too.
Good luck!

I wish I had sat down and planned my a little more, so it's probably best to take the opportunity and really think about what you want and how it should look/work. It's a personal thing, I know, but I prefer to keep things simple, clean, and elegant.
The CSS code is quite easy - you can just insert what others have recommended here when you are ready.

Not quite sure I'm understanding about migrating, presumably it means unveiling the finished article to the public?

OK well it seems I migrated my site before I went on holiday and the big rush began so I'm happily playing behind the scenes.
I do have a question about the collage landscape view - how is it possible to re-arrange the images in this view?

Organizer, click on the gallery name, select the sort sequence (drop-down, upper right), drag & drop if you select manual.

Unfortunately I grabbed images from various galleries and just added them to the collage ......

I saw that earlier - excellent work! It should give people plenty of confidence as they dip their toes in.

Thanks to you both:)
Ican't get an option in settings to edit the photos I've randomly selected, is it worthwhile making a seperate post about this or am I just an odd ball selecting random images?

Then in there:
It sounds like this is what you need (unfortunately). For now you need to select the images in the order in which you want them to appear, pretty painful.

Denise thank you, it's probably a minor point and a good indication of how it helps to be more organized at the outset!
