Restore image names being independent of the gallery

Back in legacy SM there was a lovely feature where the links to individual photos were effectively independent of the gallery. e.g. if I linked to a photo like this
photos.miseast.org/NorthKorea/Hunger-and-need-in-North-Korea/23980306_3kDnsw
then it would still work if I moved the gallery around e.g. to this
photos.miseast.org/NorthKorea/2012/Hunger-and-need-in-North-Korea/23980306_3kDnsw
This was truly brilliant as it allowed me to archive older galleries but not break any existing links. Where possible I had always tried to embed photos on other sites from smugmug rather than uploading them again. However now it is no longer safe to do that as if the gallery name changes for any reason then the links break :cry
Similarly it was possible to construct a link to a gallery that would always work even if the gallery moved as it used a gallery ID but that has completely gone now.
Any chance of getting this back at all (or have I missed something)? It was a hugely powerful feature and meant that could keep my top level galleries nice and tidy without having to worry about changing links all over the place
