Hi Y'all,

Last October I got VIP tickets for a political rally for VP nominee John Edwards and was asked to take some pics. I got to the site real early and found a perfect spot to take some shots with my 70-200/2.8. The rally was started around sunset and when I opened up my lens bag I found my 80-400 instead of my 70-200. Then when things started I discovered that directly in front of where I planned to shoot they lit a very , very strong light making it impossible to shoot from that spot.

So with no set spot to shoot from and with the wrong lens I did what I could. As always the folks in the audience were the best show. It was exciting to see so many people participating in the process and not so much exactly what they were supporting. I could have gotten the same shots at a Bush rally.

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

good shots, my only problem is with that last one. i think you might've sharpened it way too much. something is definitely wierd about it.

It looks kind of like Edwards is wearing contacts. I keep wondering how his wife and family et al are doing.

Good photos, Harry. I bet your heart dropped below ground when you saw only the "wrong" lens.

Thank you Barry. The last shot was definitely not over sharpened. I don't see anything amiss myself. The lighting was funky as he had strong lighting hitting him on his left side.

Compared to the others there seems to be a lot of noise. It looks odd to me as well. :)

Great series Harry. I was just about to ask what a fella with Iron Crosses on his hands was doing at a John Edwards rally. Seems kind of inappropriate, doesn't it?? But he is wearing his wedding ring, so.....

Now that I think about it he probably was wearing contacts. He was definitely a blinker. I had to cull out a ton of shots because he had his eyes closed.

I was more ticked at my own carelessness. I was kicking myself the whole night.

That last one was shot at a much higher ISO (1000) as it was after sunset. Doesn't look odd to me. Maybe thats the affect politicians have. :D

I was prez of my college Young Republican club and went to all their conventions and leadership conferences and I gotta tell you that you probably would find a few similar looking folks in a Bush crowd. Of course the other folks wouldn't have been as close as in this picture. :lol4

The last shot of Edwards was at ISO 1000.

    Hey PF,

I don't think he was concerned with appropriateness. :):

A very nice series, Harry. My favorite is the black and white from the older woman. A very nice expression, and a nice B&W conversion! I think the last one suffers slightly from motion blur. Very slightly, but enough to give a sense of strangeness to the picture.
enjoy being here while getting there

Thanks, I'm kind of partial to the B&W myself. I think you may have the answer for the last shot. It was at a slow shutter speed and Edwards was very animated.

The last shot of Edwards was at ISO 1000.

High ISO = More grain and noise. Thats what everyone is noticing. Plus as you said slower shutter speed and he was animated so while parts of it are sharp, he was a bad model and blurred other parts like his hair. Black and White would prolly work alot better with the grain. Did you shoot in raw or .jpg? If it was in raw some of the noise can easily be removed in photoshop.
