Uploader: should use md5 hash to check for duplicates

It would be very nice if the photo uploader did a better job of detecting duplicates. From what I can tell it looks like it is only using filenames right now. This causes problems when I am uploading images from multiple cameras and phones into the same folder.
From the APIs it looks like there is a hash (MD5) available for all existing files. Could the uploader take this into account when uploading to check if the hash's match and skip if there is a match?

AND the uploader should be set to default to upload duplicates! Or at the very least, allow us to choose our preference BEFORE the uploading begins! It drives me insane that the uploading starts immediately & 5 files are often uploaded before my preference has even registered. Also, it does not specify whether the duplicates referred to exist somewhere on your site, or exist in that gallery! (after years of uploading, I still do not know the answer!)

Agreed. That is something that always frustrates me when uploading photos. I can't select allow duplicates fast enough and I have no idea what "duplicate" means anyway. I always err on the side of caution because I don't want to lose any photos. Very frustrating.
