Smokey theme, show gallery name on hover?

I'm testing out the smokey theme which I like quite a bit so far. I'd like to set each of the photos on the homescreen to be one from my different main categories. Is there a way to show text on the image when you hover your mouse over it? Can you change it so the photos link to a category instead of a specific gallery?
