Stretchy does't really stretch

Until now, I have only seen my new site on a “regular screen”. Today for the 1st time I saw it on a wide one, and I did not like what I saw.
My layout is set to stretchy (entire site, all folders, all galleries). As I understood – with the new SM my site should be adjusted to any type \ size \ proportions of the screen on which it is viewed.
But what happens is that the banner, which is 1280x130 pixels, doesn’t stretch. It remains the size of a “regular” screen, leaving a void to its right. On folder pages (in my site: nature, travel, art & misc) – things look OK. But on the homepage where I only have 4 thumbnails and a slideshow (and a text box) – there’s also so much empty space on the right.
I can’t remember if I looked at the galleries themselves, and it I did, I don’t remember what I saw).

What am I doing wrong?
How can I fix this?
Maybe I just misunderstood the part about adjusting to any type of screen?
