Wanting folders on homepage to link to gallery (custom URLs links)

Hi all,

On my legacy site www.bernardpearson.com I had my homepage setup to view Gallery categories.
With the rollout of the new smugmug those catagories migrated over as folders that are now displayed on the homepage. On the legacy site I had it setup so that when you clicked on a image (catagory) it would take you directly wthin a gallery. At some point I think I may have had added some code that would defaulted to display the gallery by default.

I have not been able to find any settings on either the homepage or folders settings to allow custom urls to be added to direct you to within a gallery from the content block on the homepage.

I have tried creating a galleries content block and this doesn't seem to work either. I think the reason why this has not worked. Is there a way to create a content block that allow say an image to have a link and by clicking the image that will take you to a custom URL ie within a gallery?

I have attached a pic that may visually explain a little better.

Any suggestions/help

Thanks

Try creating a content block on the homepage of galleries; it's under navigation. Then you can select the galleries you want. Once you do that, I think when clicked it will take you to the individual gallery.

    Thanks Cynthia,
I have tried this however doesn't seem to work.

For example on my legacy site from my homepage the link for clients takes me to a folder where multiple galleries are located.
Selecting animals for example takes me directly into a single gallery to display the images straight away.

From my homepage these are the links on my legacy site that contain multiple galleries:
    Clients, Models, Personal
    http://www.bernardpearson.com/Clients
    http://www.bernardpearson.com/Models
    http://www.bernardpearson.com/Category

These are the links that take me directly into a single gallery
    Movies, family, animals, children

    http://www.bernardpearson.com/Children/Kids-and-Babies/11303596_33WLS9#!i=793307138&k=cxb4pKg

Q: You can have a content block however only seems to allow you to either display folders, or galleries and not both at the same time. I think I need to have the link for a folder (clients, models, personal)
and links to galleries movies, family, animals, children.

Please if anybody can help, suggestions.

    Thanks:help

The jump directly into a gallery when a category contained only a single gallery (on legacy smugmug) was done with the aid of one of JFriend's javascript customizations. Javascript is not currently supported in the new smugmug. Your two options right now are the double hop (click on the folder, then click on the gallery) or using a custom-built page that mixes galleries and folders as Cynthia recommended.

You can create a content block that will allow you to add galleries, folders and pages into one block. I don't think you will be able to sort between them; only within, but they will all appear in the same block. Go to customize>customize site, highlight homepage, under add content blocks click navigation, then folders, galleries & pages. That is what I did on this page; http://www.cynthiamerzerphotography.com/More. The last four block go right to a gallery while the ones prior open to a folder where you then choose a gallery. The sorting is limited, doesn't have the same functionality as legacy smugumug. I can manually sort the galleries at the end, but I can't put a gallery before or in between a folder and vice versa, I can sort the folders but I can't move one in between the galleries.

I don't remember exactly how I did this. You first have to create the block using the customizer, and then I may have gone into the organizer to add the galleries and folders.

    Hope that helps!

Hi Cynthia, thanks for your many tips. I like your site and your work very much. One hint I'll suggest is that if one gets to your street stuff then clicks on More it opens very nicely to another folder but then, there is no way out that I could see except the browser back button. Perhaps a 'back' icon or text linked to the previous page would keep people on your site. If you don't do that but you do serve lunch then I'll just wait right here. :D
    Thanks!

Hmm. Not quite sure what you are referring to? If I go to More!>Street Photography, there is a breadcrumb in the street photography gallery that will take you back to More! or Home.

Sorry, I had it backwards. I thought I saw no breadcrumbs when I clicked 'more'

    Hi all,

Thank you everybody for taking the time to reply to my post and for your help and suggestions.
CynthiaM suggested exactly what I was trying to create. After adding the navigation block (folders/galleries/pages) then - > select from (items choose, from drop down). It took me a little while to work our that you had to navigate through and select at either the folder level or double click within and select at gallery level, and all items in this content block to be displayed must be all selected at the the same time.
I think this new smugmug is a learning curve and I think by helping each other we'll persevere through these teething issues.

    Kind Regards
