I've been using the BH55 for a while and am satisfied with it.

Are there any questions I can answer for you?

Ian, just "satisfied"? On a scale of 1 to 10, that sounds like maybe a 6. After spending $450 on a ball head, I would want to be "blown away", or "ecstatic", or at least "thoroughly impressed". So are you just being low-key, or do you feel that there is room for improvement?

I think I'm down to Markins and RRS at this point, so I'm looking for real world data to help me choose. I have a Canon 20D + 100-400L, and TC that I want to be able to pan, then lock down rock-solid. It should be easy to operate, smooth as silk, and lock down with absolutely no extraneous motion. I'll probably get a longer lens some day and don't want to have to upgrade at that time. Although there is probably a Wimberly Sidekick in my future. Any thoughts?

    Thanks,
    -joel

    Joel,

I try not to get too excited about things like this :D

On a scale of 1-10, I'm probably a 9.5. It's got a tiny rock in it which RRS will
fix (there's some sort of tensioning adjustment that's inside the body--"no
    user servicable parts").

The head is smooth as a babies bottom. A couple of the things I like about it
include the smoothness of the ball and the ability to tension the ball without
locking it. The plate has a quick release that's one of the better too. And it is
    very easy to operate.

If you asked if I would recommend it, I'd say absolutely! And their customer
    service is very good too.

I replaced my Arca-Swiss Ball Head with the RRS like Ian's and I like it a great deal. It is smooth, easy to lock and unlock, and does not slip. Looks real cool, too!!

I've been eyeing their smaller ball head as well - it is supposed to be light and tight. Probably not as light as the Acra-Tech, but maybe stronger?

I also have the RRS BH55 but Dani is looking for the BH40.

I can't comment on the BH40 directly but I can say that everything I've gotten from them (more than I'd like to admit) has been top quality - very strong and just has a feeling of being well designed and expertly manufactured.

As for service I haven't had any issue that has needed service but they have been very friendly and knowledgeable on the phone when I've ordered or had questions.

    Highly reccomended. thumb.gifthumb.gif
