edit photo details not working

Under legacy a lot of my images had captions rather than titles. So I've been going through my galleries editing the phot details from the light-box using the wrench icon (wrench/edit/photo details). But for most images when I cut (CTRL/X) and paste (CTRL/V) from caption to title it fails to retain the change when I go back to the lightbox.
At first I thought the screen just needed to refresh, but upon going back into edit I find the change has been lost and both caption and title are blank. I re-enter the title and then it saves it OK. What's going on? Don't tell me I need to do the changes from the organiser - else why is the wrench option on the lightbox?
