SmugMug's advice on cleaning up erroneous keywords?

Sorry to start another thread on a subject that's been brought up a lot of times, but I haven't seen an answer to my question yet.

As I've mentioned before, when smugmug introduced new smug, my site generated hundreds of erroneous keywords from filenames, particularly in very old password protected galleries (so my visitors don't see most of them). And for the record I have never used the bug that creates keywords from filenames. I think maybe these images were uploaded at the time that bug was broken.

But I like maintaining a clean keywords list. This is not what I want:

Of course I don't see that on new smug because of the 255 keyword limit, which means I'd never even know i have so many erroneous keywords indexed.

Anyway, I didn't create these keywords. And not all of them are numeric. How do I get rid of them? Prior to newsmug, I would have been able to do it myself easily.

Dave

Hmm... looks like I'm not the only one with such an issue. Take it from me, if you do it yourself it could take ages - it took me over 12 hours (not including breaks) to delete mine manually because SM wouldn't help. Looking at your screenshot, you have far more to get rid of than I had.

I hope you don't mind if I pull up a chair, put my feet up and watch how this unfolds.

I hope you get sorted soon. Good luck!

You must have had "Filename Keywording" on in your settings. Make sure that's off. Next, write the heroes, there is someone at SmugMug that can relatively easily remove all those numeric keywords for you .

I don't know if you remember how many times I debated with you whether filename keywording is a feature or a bug. There was a period of time when that so called feature (which I still very much believe serves no purpose other than to destroy keyword searches) was broken. After it was fixed, smugmug gave us the option of whether or not to use it. So I'm thinking that these affected images were uploaded while the feature was broken. The keywords never existed on my site until new smug was introduced. I would have noticed if my keyword list looked like such a mess. So again, I did not create those keywords. Smugmug did. Because of the single silliest feature that exists on smugmug.

Fyi that filename keywording is the reason there are a bunch of restricted keywords we aren't able to use (like web), and the reason a "remove numeric" option was added to the bulk keyword tool. All it does is create messes.

I often use the keyword list to find one off keywords that are usually misspelled our typos. That's no longer possible on new smug.

I'd love for a comment from smugmug on the keyword management issues with new smug.

Andy's correct, this was taken care of by a Hero in the past. He wrote a simple? app to remove them, in
this case the erroneous numbers from file names.

Guess what? They broke this on the legacy site also. No longer possible.

Here's the official response from the help desk:
    Hi Dave,

    Thank you for contacting SmugMug.

Those keywords are from the filenames for your images. I am sorry but you will have to remove those keywords manually since filename keyword display must have been turned on in your galleries.

Follow these steps to remove the keywords in bulk from the new SmugMug.

organize > organize site > choose the gallery > click on the wrench icon > captions & keywords

Please let us know if we can do anything else to assist you.

Smugmug has become awfully frustrating over the last 2 years. I know the help desk has gotten busier since the big launch, but it's obvious the level of support has gone way down hill. A bug caused a bunch of erroneous keywords to be generated and smugmug won't do a thing about it.

Please give a specific path to get to "Filename Keywording" in settings.

I am still rather dizzy with the orientation to the new SmugMug. I like the new tools much better and I'm going to be used to them someday, but right now I am challenged by the drilling down needed to get to the correct tools for the specific task.

I've looked and I cannot find anything about keywords from my filenames. I do not want it on but I obviously had it on in the past. I have clean up to do from ridiculous and unwelcome keywords that were generated.

Thanks for the pathway. I have double checked that it is turned off. Now I am working through the tedious process of inspecting all my galleries one-by-one to get the errant and useless keywords extracted from the days when keywords were first extracted and made available on SM.

Just a hint / question: you don't have a sitemap for your site defined (URL in your signature) and you blocking all crawler. Is this on purpose?
