"Anonymous link"

Hi.

Previously on SmugMug there was a trick to get an anonymous link to a picture in a given size to e.g. post on a forum. But after the updates recently I can't find how to do that. The only way I know that still works is to "copy" the picture to an anonymous gallery and create the link from there, but that creates an artifact in the site structure that should not be necessary. The galleries I'd like to share from may be either unlisted or listed.

After some experimenting I've found ways to link a picture like http://username.smugmug.com/pictures/String_from_end_of_original_link-X2.jpg, but if I substitute "username" with "www" it redirects to the username-version of the link and thus the username is exposed which is what I'd like to hide.

Of course there will always be ways to find out, e.g. by asking SmugMug, but that is just fine. There are times when I'd like to post a picture in a mail without sharing large parts of my photo hobby with the recipient.

So... Is there still such a trick?

No, what I want is a link that neither display my custom domain nor my smugmug username. I see no reason for showing the folder names, in these (very few) cases I just want to show a picture without on the same time giving a link back to my entire photo web site.

So..... first time in several months that I've gone out and shot some images I want to share only to discover that the old method of creating an anonymous link does not seem to be available in the new Smugmug.

Previously, we found the imageID and/or imageKEY from the URL display in the browser when we went to the old Smugmug style and clicked on one of the thumbnails on the lefthand side of the page. Per this thread....

    - see post #9

Using that technique I can create an anonymous confidential link to one of my images to share in a forum, for example:

    http://cdn.smugmug.com/photos/2048254361_sQQ7g22-L.jpg

gives me an image as below and changing the "-L" to "-XL" or "-O" lets me control the size.

    2048254361_sQQ7g22-L.jpg

Now there seems to be no way to determine this image ID/Key. I want access to the "2048254361_sQQ7g22" information. Is there a way to find this?

I think what you have to do is put the photo into a gallery that has 'hide owner' set to true in the privacy settings. The links are then from smugmug rather than you. I don't know if this works with virtual galleries but I can't see why not

edit: it works with smart galleries if you replace your url at the start with photos.smugmug.com but the link allen gives below is probably a better way

Took a bit to parse out but that looks like it will do once you substitute the code into the file name and remember to change both size parameters.

I wish Smugmug would simply give us an "Anonymous Link" share option from within the image page.

    PS... thanks for the link!
