Problem uploading new versions of images with simple uploader.

With the advent of new SM, I am taking the opportunity to replace some of my images with higher resolution images with the same file names. The purpose of this is to take advantage of the lightbox full screen display.
I have encountered a problem.
Using the standard (drag & drop) uploader, there are options: skip duplicates, add or replace.
I wish to replace, but this option adds the files so that I end up with duplicate images in the gallery.
The original images have captions and keywords which I added to them in SmugMug. The duplicates do not - which is to be expected.
I was hoping that I could upload images which would overwrite the existing ones and yet inherit the captions and keywords defined for the old versions. I dread the thought of having to re-enter all the captions and keywords.
Please could an expert help? Thank you in advance.

Perhaps I am being impatient, but the response of experts is usually rapid.
(Perhaps my above query has become lost in the system).
Is the failure of image replacement, using drag and drop upload, a bug?
I should be most grateful for any guidance with my problem.

It is reassuring that you are on the case and that I am not to blame!
Keep up the good work. It must be a nightmare with such profound changes to manage.
