Seeking confirmation of best way to put special characters into photo captions

I was trying to put a "diameter" symbol - ⌀ - into some of my photo captions. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diameter_%28symbol%29#Diameter_symbol refers. I'm working with XP SP3.

Unicode: & # 8960; (without the spaces) works;
Cut 'n Paste works;
Keyboard: Alt + 8960 doesn't work,
LaTeX: \diameter doesn't work.

So the question is: Is there a better way?

    We don't have a better way than copy and paste.

    For my concern I'd like to put some special national characters in captions or keywords, like icelandic langage for example (though in that case people are used to use "D" or "th" in place of the right ones).
    Note that I have same problems in LR for example.
    Any idea?

    FWIW, back in Legacy I used copy/paste to put Faeroese and Icelandic characters into my captions, they migrated to NewSM just fine - have a look at http://beardedgit.smugmug.com/Holidays/HM (scanned slides from the pre-digital age!)

    Go for it! Here's something that might help: http://gate2home.com/ - choose a language, type what you want in the box (using either a keyboard or a mouse) and then copy/paste into SM caption - it works for me, YMMV, I've not tried it on a touch-screen device.

    I should perhaps point out that the gate2home utility doesn't check spellings, punctuation, grammar or context, so if users persist in typing words that don't exist such as "alot" and out-of-context words such as "abit", they'll continue to look foolish :D:D:D

    Thanks, but none of the Alt + keyboard codes work directly in a photo caption box. Or at least they don't work for me. I'll stick with using the proper symbol code (Alt + 8960) in a local document and then copy/paste the output into the captions.

    Thinking about it, maybe it's my kit that's the problem. I'm using a laptop, it has the standard row of numerals above the "QWERTYUIOP" letters, but it doesn't have a bona fide numeric keypad. Does that make a difference when using Alt + codes?

    Pretty much answering my own question here... yes, it does make a difference!

    The proper way to cope without a proper numpad, according to the manual for my Lenovo, is to hit Fn + NmLk to "activate" the secondary numeral set (this maps standard keys mjkluio789 to 0123456789) and to use numerals from that set while holding down the Alt key.

    Using this method, I CAN use some Alt + codes in photo captions. The two codes supplied by ablichter (Alt + 0216 Ø and Alt + 0248 ø) do work, but Alt + 8960 still refuses to play ball. I guess it's a font issue, since Wiki says "The character often will not display correctly, however, since most fonts do not include it."

    So, it's a typical case for me... just pure luck that the one character I wanted to use happened to be the one that won't display when typed but will display when pasted-in headscratch.gif

    :bash:bash:bash:bash:bash

    I'll stick to the copying/pasting.

    Another "yes" ;-) ALT + 8960 does not work here as well.

    Check your PM, I built a script which copies the large sign Ø to the clipboard. If you need the small one, let me know.

    I'll have a play with it sometime during the next day or two and will report back to you.

    I love the appearance of your galleries!
    How did you arrange this display which only shows captions when mouse is over image?
    I should love to emulate this on my site when courageous enough to unveil.

    Seems BG is away for a while.

    How very kind of you to respond! Thank you.

    Maybe I am being stupid, but I cannot find these settings. I am referring to new SM (I have yet to unveil).
    My path is: Customize > Gallery Settings > which brings up a new window, the left panel shows 'Appearance' but nothing else relevant.
    I cannot find 'Display'

    Could you please guide me further?

    Ah yes. It might depend on the design you are using or the gallery style.
    You need to choose a design on which "collage landscape" or "collage portrait" is default (like nyx) or set a single gallery to "collage landscape", if possible.
    What is the design you are using?

    Allen, you always seem to come to my rescue!
    I'm not clear what you mean by 'the actual folder out in the page'.
    Presumably, my path should be Customize > Gallery Settings > ... but here I'm lost.
    I have tried via Organize, which also accesses Gallery Setting just like the Customize path.
    I am sorry to be acting like a ninny; can you possibly guide me a little further?
    Many thanks, as ever.

    Eureka! That would appear to be the key, I am using basic old SmugMug theme with standard gallery style, which would explain my loss of bearings.
    Thank you very much: most interesting, we live and learn. But, how this move to new SM tests one's patience!
    Best wishes,

    Hey! Why sticking to the old smugmug design? You can try any new design provided, configuring and save them to your like and and later decide which one to use. Or switching between them once in a while.
    Take it easy. ;)

    Jörg, you are quite right sir!

    Thanks for the kind words thumb.gif

    As for the display, well, I'm lost. I've changed things so many times that I don't know where I am...

    I started with a Basic Account, and had the "info settings" set to "bottom bar" and "captions display on hover/mouseover" or whatever it was.
    Then I got upgraded to Power, and things went odd for a while...
    When it came back I had new options. I chose the SmugMug Layout with SmugMug Style Galleries. Then I changed the galleries to Collage Landscape, retaining the SmugMug layout, and that's what you see. I don't recall setting any "hover/mouseover" option for Collage Landscape, my feeling is that the setting is either: a) inherited from when I was a Basic user; b) a default; or c) hiding down the back of the sofa.

    I'm very happy with the way it looks, and moderately happy with the way it works, but I dare not make edits that I might not be able to "back out".

    So, I'd like to be able to tell you how I did it, but I don't have a clue! headscratch.gifscratchheadscratch.gif

    Something that I missed - I added some CSS to my Collage Landscape galleries to make the captions easier on my aging eyes...
    .sm-gallery-roworganic .sm-tile-info{text-align:center;font-size:120%;color:#fff!important}
