Oh my word, thank-you so much to everyone who voted for my "toy train" image, and everyone who entered this tough challenge. I've taken part in dozens of challenges over the years and had a few top 5 places, but this is my first ever win. Such a shame that it might be the last challenge, let's hope not. Thanks again to Joyce and Sean, and everyone else who kept these going over the years

Congrats John. I''d have voted for you, but the title told me it wasn't my game to play ;)

Yeah, as a woman in a STEM field, I'm pretty sensitive to the pervasive and negative gender stereotyping when it comes to kids.

Your welcome John. Actually, I was glad that you redid and adjusted you blur on this. The feathering in the blur is a must and this is a much better job at it than your first entry was. Kudos and congrats!

We will have some challenges, but they will be gear toward trying something new. If it build up to having it like the DSS again, we will consider that when it happens. The DSS ran for 5 years, which is a pretty long haul for a challenge.

Thanks "kolibri", this is all rather ironic on many levels. I was a social worker for 26 years and am one of the most politically correct people you could meet, often to the total distraction of my friends :D

The phrase "toys for boys" is used as a derogatory term in the UK, usually aimed at grown men who gather together in closed groups to "play", often in sheds, often with mechanical or electrical gadgets, and usually at the exclusion of women. It is not an activity I enjoy or condone in others.

My original title was going to be "Toy Town", but I changed it at the last minute because I preferred the rhyming of "toys for boys". There was a discussion thread a few months ago about the importance of titles, this is a clear example of it I suppose.

Finally, yesterday I was photographing a steam locomotive at the same location, and was pleasantly surprised to note that the train driver was a young woman clap.gif

Honestly I am the last person who would ever resort to gender stereotyping, apologies if it came over at all here, that wasn't my intention thumb.gif

Well, you are a good sport with my pet peeve. It's just that when you live in a world where even the EU comes up with some ridiculous top-down crap like this: http://www.theguardian.com/science/blog/2012/jun/29/science-girl-thing-viral-fiasco it makes one kind of sensitive. All the public outreach I do in schools makes me realize that it's not only the big voices like Lawrence Summer that perpetuate these stereotypes, but the 'death by a thousand papers cuts', of the pervasive sexist language that some kids grow up in, and it's so omnipresent that many people don't even notice it in the background noise.
