is a really SLOW slide show. I mean glacially slow. I mean the grass grows faster.
Since we probably don't want to track users with cookies, I mean slow slide shows that cycle the featured photographs on our website every day, or few hours, or week so that they reward visitors for returning. So that when we're doing other things, like taking pictures, our web sites seem like living, growing places -- even though we're not giving them any attention.
Is this the dumbest idea you ever heard of?
Can it be done using the existing tools?

Here's a feature request for something pretty similar that you could add your voice to:

But, on your new Smugmug site you ARE doing something similar. I love the way a new image loads when you refresh the screen. How are you doing that?
Unfortunately, apart from the sacrifices, it also requires JavaScript, which I've only enabled using a hack which is pretty hard to replicate and requires an additional server to achieve. It's not suitable for general consumption.
