Private Gallery Access with Password Set Results in 404 Page Not Found for Client

I am having an issue giving a custom URL to a Private Gallery (two galleries specifically) that are password protected. Each visit to the gallery URL results in a Page Not Found error instead of the user being asked for the password to access the Private Gallery. I thought the container folder permissions might have had something to do with the failure I was seeing so I moved the private galleries to a public folder instead of a private folder, but I always encounter the Page Not Found error in either scenario. The two test scenarios were:
>Folder (public)
>>Gallery (private w/password)
>Folder (private w/password; password same as gallery password)
>>Gallery (private w/password)
What am I doing wrong? I could have sworn this was a feature in the old smugmug, is this type of access no longer supported? i.e. a Private Gallery that prompts users for a password to access it?
Thanks in advance!

Private galleries can only be accessed by the site owner; they did not exist prior to the new smugmug. From the help page at http://help.smugmug.com/customer/portal/articles/1229910-new-smugmug-what-are-the-gallery-level-privacy-settings-: Galleries for customer access with password can be set to public or unlisted.
