This one was peeping at me around a stalk




Another species of hover in our garden. Not completely sure, think it could be Cheilosia or something like it. Have looked at http://syrphidae.3644.co.uk/ but the images there are terrible.

Wonderful series Ian. Think the hover you are unsure about is Platycheirus albimanus (fairly small hover)

It was a small one for sure. Thoughti it was a Syritta or even parasitoid wasp to start off with. Of course its hovering confirmed it to be a hover.

Do you have a recommendation for a good hoverfly resource site as opposed to the one I linked?

ISBN 978-0-691-15659-0 which is good (has some of my pics in it )

Stuart Ball has just signed up on Talk Photography and has been rather helpful in correcting me on a few ID's too.
