This one was peeping at me around a stalk
Another species of hover in our garden. Not completely sure, think it could be Cheilosia or something like it. Have looked at http://syrphidae.3644.co.uk/ but the images there are terrible.
Eupeodes corollae

It was a small one for sure. Thoughti it was a Syritta or even parasitoid wasp to start off with. Of course its hovering confirmed it to be a hover.
Do you have a recommendation for a good hoverfly resource site as opposed to the one I linked?

Good resource on flickr- http://www.flickr.com/photos/63075200@N07/collections/72157629600153789/
I also have a copy of Britain's Hoverflies - Stuart Ball and Roger Morris pub by WildGuides
ISBN 978-0-691-15659-0 which is good (has some of my pics in it )
and luckily Roger Morris often ID's hovers for me on my flickr gallery
