Confused....need some help getting organized!

I've been watching the videos, reading tutorials, and browsing some of the postings here for several weeks...off and on.
Still at square one! Frustrating.
I am trying to set up my Galleries and have them accessible from my Homepage. Seems like that should be simple...but I can't seem to figure out the problem.
I have gotten content blocks "installed" on my Homepage. Nothing is in them...!!
I have Galleries set up, but can't access them from my Homepage link. ???
Not sure how to get photos into my blocks...and what hierarchy of folders, galleries to use.
It seems that each time I go to work on this, I learn something else and take a small step. But, at this point, I think I'm missing something basic and fundamental and just getting more and more confused. What's worse is that I have no SmugMug site to share with people and that's starting to be a problem now.
The videos make it look so easy......
