Side Navigation - Folder Content Text Only

Is there a way to create a side navigation menu that would show all folders, one level higher? For example, let's say I have a photo gallery organized like this:
Dogs -> Dog Breeds - Dog Breed Gallery
Ideally if I'm viewing a specific Dog Breed Gallery, then the side navigation would show a listing of all it's parent elements, (Dog Breeds). If I'm looking at the Dog Breeds folder, then the side navigation would show the parent folder - Dogs... and so on.
The closest widget I've found for this is the "Folders, Galleries & Pages" navigation widget, but the only dynamically populated options are to show items from the "Current Location" OR the "Top Level Items". I'm looking for a "Parent Level Item" option.
Can this be implemented for the side navigation? It's actually identical to the breadcrumb widget BUT listed vertically. Is there a work around I missed (other than to do this all manually)?
