Need to add some space between nav bar and logo

Id like to be able to place a little more space between the header and the navbar (top to bottom, not left to right,sorry im no good at getting my thoughts out). so a little more centered below the logo (my name), and the large photo.

also how to make the menu box longer to allow longer words? I had to go with 'new' instead of 'recent photos'

I suck at css btw.
