Resizing Gallery Photos

With old (er, "legacy") format, I had no problem compressing photos for web use (my blog, to be specific). I attempted drag-and-drop into WordPress -- never problem in past. Gotcha msg. popped up preventing upload, declaring that file "exceeds size limit," although doesn't tell what MB limit is. How does one resize -- actually, DOWNsize -- photos so can be inserted into WordPress-template blog?

There's an "image sizes" button in the bottom left corner of the lightbox, you can choose a smaller image there.
