Life in the Little Streets

One of my favorite neighborhoods happens to be in Shanghai. Just off the crowded streets are narrow pockets of ordinary people going about their daily, unhurried lives. The rich texture of the mundane seems compressed in these little passageways, great places to escape to real life. I think the best ones are like this where you must pass from noisy bright streets through a dim and quiet portal into a strangely familiar room defined by grimy smooth pavement, a ceiling of wire and laundry, and people doing what they do.
