I have a silly question. Do I have to create a left-side bar in order to put my navigation menu vertically on the left side?

You do not "have" to, but it will make your life alot easier. You can do it with alot of custom margins and such, but it is much easier to have a left side bar. Is there a reason you don't want a side bar?

Actually I don't want the side bar but I want the navigation menu appears on the left-hand side. However, when I change the navigation to the left and vertical setting, the nav bar appears above my photos/folders, rather than next to my photos/folders

If you want your photos to appear on the right of your navigation bar then you need a left sidebar.

Try to start with one of the available designs that matches your navigation menu... like DINA. Then start over to tweak it to fit your needs.

P.S: You could also add a menu bar side by side with a content block if you don't want to have the menubar side wide (i.e. entire site). But you need to add it on every level (homepage/all folders/all galleries...). Needs a lot of work...
If you want to create a menu once and make it available for the "entire site" (and maybe stay pinned at the same position) then you need a sidebar on the left.

Note: sidebar is buggy. I tried it more then once... and stopped using it.
