Making Use of the Maps

Not quite a customization but something I thought others might be interested in. On some of my longer trips I usually end up with several galleries and no easy way of showing the extent of the trip. In the past, I usually added a map or a link to the route. The new map functionality gave me an idea on how to better do this.

I created an overview gallery and collected geo-tagged photos from the other galleries so that all of the locations are represented. The overview gallery also serves as a quick perusal of the content of the other galleries. When you click on the globe icon at the bottom right of the large image a map pops up populated with pins at the locations visited. The collected photos also facilitate navigation to the original galleries. I've only done this with one trip so far but I'm pleased with the results.

This is the link http://paultavares.smugmug.com/Travel/Europe/2011-Grand-Tour-of-Britain-and/Overview if anyone is interested. The first image is not the map, click on the globe icon to get the map. It would be nice to be able to collect photos to a page with just a map in addition to collecting to galleries.

Another use may be of interest to birders. I maintain a photo life list and the new mapping now allows me to see where the images were taken, and in geographic clusters. The neat part is being able to drill down by clicking on the large numbers on the aggregated pins. Link to the gallery http://paultavares.smugmug.com/Wildlife/Birds/MyBirds . Click on the globe icon under to large image to see this in practice. Click on the pin with the large number (132) in central Canada to see the drill down in action.

I'm still in the process of adding tags so not all my galleries have this capability yet.

Regards
Paul
