Is sharpening working at all?

I'm a new smugmug-er (well, came back since the new smugmug started up). I'm using LR 5.2 and the smugmug plug-in to create folders, galleries and upload images. I have a power smugmug account.
I've tried setting the sharpening values when I create a gallery (both in the LR plug-in and on the website). I've also tried to edit the sharpening values in the plug-in (I can't find them in the editing gallery settings on the website, the tab seems to be missing and has already been reported as a bug).
Anyway, no matter what settings I use, all of the smaller display sizes are horribly soft. The x3 size isn't bad, but the medium size that I'd like to use when I post on forums is so soft that it looks out of focus. I've read that you need to rotate the pictures on smug mug...anything to get them to rebuild the images, but that didn't work to update the display sizes. I've also created the galleries new, and re-uploaded the images to see if I could get new sharpness settings to "take".
Do anyone have this working properly? What settings are you using and how have you gotten smugmug to actually use those settings when creating your various image sizes?
Thanks for any advice.

x3 looks great, x2 ok, xl a little soft, large and below...yuck.
FWIW, I used a medium size image link to post to a forum on dpreview and it was atrociously soft. To my eye, it seemed even worse than viewing it on smugmug directly. The dpreview thread with my embedded medium size images can be seen here
<edit to add another link>
The flickr version of the medium size (640x480) can be seen here It looks sharper than my smugmug version (look at the bricks) and way sharper than the embedded image I put into the dpreview thread.
Color me confused.
Thanks for any tips.

Thanks for your reply. I needed the sanity check. I was wondering if I was imagining things or whether it was all in my head. I've contacted support via email. If they're able to figure out what's up, I'll post it to this thread as an update.

Oooooh! Now I get it. I thought that the tab just wasn't showing up so that if I created the galleries new or used the LR plug-in, I could set the sharpness settings and they'd "take". Now I know it's more than just a missing tab.
Thanks so much for the heads up.
