From Legacy to New Smug Mug Questions

This is my first post! I lurk quite a bit looking for customization tips (thanks by the way!), but never needed to post anything. Anyway, I spent A LOT of time customizing my site and have put off migrating to the new API. Realizing that the legacy API will not be supported forever (plus I like the photo blog and the interface looks more modern!), I'm looking into starting the process. I have several questions that I was hoping I could get some answers to first though:

1. While migrating/customizing, can I keep my legacy site live for clients?
2. Can I still hide breadcrumbs?
3. Can I still have drop down menus? (It's just CSS based)
4. Can I still use JFriend's HTML5 Slideshow?
5. There was a nifty piece of Javascript that enabled a Client Login (If I recall this was the only solution around). Does the new SmugMug have this feature or can I still use this code?

The most important question is #1. Also, is there a good place to go for tips for customizing the new SmugMug? Thanks for any help that can be offered!

If you start migration then your new smugmug site is in sandbox-mode. You can customize as long and as often as you want, your clients will see legacy only. Once you decide to "unveil" your new site goes "live" and legacy disappears. As long as you do not add extra/new content while working on your new smug everything should be fine.

Yes... simply remove the breadcrumb content block from the "all galleries" menu.

Yes, there is a menu content block that also includes settings for drop-down menus. But you can still add your own css code.

No. You can't use JavaScript anylonger...

You can make your sites/pages password protected. Not sure what your code does, but if javascript based then you can't use it anymore.

I am not a Hero . . but I just went thru the transition. I was disappointed to find that the wall between sandbox mode and your working site IS NOT absolute. I had unanticipated changes in my legacy site, which were not documented in advance by Smugmug, and which were aggravating enough that it forced me to unveil before I had planned to. The OP should research this on this forum (others report similar experiences) before being too complacent. Unfortunately, the Heroes monitoring the email inbox are not always candid about this.

Thanks for the responses phaserbeam. Regarding the 'client login', I had a link that people would click, then when they entered the password it automatically took them to their private gallery. Was pretty convenient.

Thanks for sharing your experience migreen. Guess I'll wait until I have a few days off from my normal job to crank it out as fast as possible. This could get messy!

I make all content changes, new galleries, photo uploads, gallery description and captions
on legacy. There's a toggle at the top of the page. Only do styling on NewSmug.

I'll take that approach Allen. Would certainly be nice if I could keep clients happy while prepping the new site for a seamless unveil.
