Ana Catarina - Adventures in Short Light

Hi all,

Since one of the things I get yelled at for periodically is to play with short lighting, I figured we'd try it with all natural light. This set is no flash, no reflectors, just using the sun on a nice diffuse cloudy day and a particularly apt location.

Let me know how close we came.

I like the set overall, and the first one is my favorite. I like her natural pose, doesn't seem forced for this type of shoot.

My nitpicks are the backgrounds in the rest but that is more how I shoot so take it FWIW. If the backgrounds are prominent, they have to be interesting or I underexpose a bit and then use flash to make the subject pop against the background.

    Thanks Jon,

I could probably go back and blur the backgrounds in 3 & 4 in PS. Honestly, I was more focused on Ana.
I agree with your technique BUT the idea here was to play with just ambient with no flash or reflectors. I did these more as an experiment and learning tool for myself. The short lighting was the key.

What lens did you use? I'm going to guess a 50 or 85 prime? Or a 70-200 shot at 70mm.

All good guesses Jon but this was my 24-105 f4L shot at 4.0 and spot metered in the camera after using the Sekonic L-358 and a gray card for custom balance.

Thanks Hack. That kind of no comment from you is both rare and priceless. Laughing.gif

Thanks Zoomer. Honestly, it's my favorite also. Ithink she hit a real "sell the clothes" pose and expression.
