What is and how do I remove an addition to my gallery labelled as 'area reserved for default smugmug content'. It is basically duplicating my visible gallery.

Every style of gallery is different. For Smugmug style click the wrench under the main photo, there's a
    delete photo there.

Or re-reading, not sure what you're referring to. The "default smugmug content" is your gallery content. Did
you add another box on the page for your photos?

This happened to me and I eventually guessed that it was a remnant of unveiling a Journal(Old) page in the new smugmug. It seems to be that "This gallery needs photos" bit on Journal (Old) pages. I had that suppressed with css (thanks Allen - once again) but that css does not work in the transfer.
My clumsy solution was just to re-create a new page in new smug and delete the other page.
My opinion does not necessarily make it true. What you do with my opinion is entirely up to you.

When under Customize > Customize site > All Galleries, the 'area reserved for SmugMug content' is the gallery content (ie, your photos). This cannot be removed from the customization screen, though you can manage your gallery content by using the Organizer tool (Organize > Organize site). Also keep in mind that any content you add under the All Galleries heading in the Customization mode will appear in every gallery on your site.

I get how the content is managed, but what about the display format details. I'd like access to the "wrench" so I can change things like title style and location. I don't see how I can do that. Did I miss something?

I really don't want to create pages that reference a gallery just so I can change the display format.

You would need to use CSS to do that. If you post more details about what you are trying to accomplish someone will be able to help you.

Did you add custom text or HTML in legacy gallery descriptions?
If so, click to Organize site, and navigate through the folders, to the gallery you want to modify, and click Settings at the top. There is a field there for gallery description. This is the content in "reserved for Smugmug content" that you are seeing. (Resembles the legacy "gallery settings" which had the same field.) There you can remove or edit the text or HTML you might have.

I have this problem that I had a lot of HTML. I'm currently considering whether to replace the content in gallery settings, with new "blocks" from new customization: title, text, HTML blocks.

If this is not what you refer to when you say, change the title, then have you worked with the custom blocks you can add, to add a title, etc, to a gallery?

Or, these are still missing what issue you are facing.

I think there may be a feature request or two out there requesting the ability to better customize that "default content", but as Denise said, currently you have to use CSS to customize it. I'd love the ability to customize the whole smugmug gallery piece by piece...like moving the photo numbers/navigation above the photo; moving the caption directly under the photo, etc. How would you like to change the title style and location?

This is, for me, a simple breakdown of the principle of least astonishment. On my home page I have an element that selects images from a single gallery. After playing around I decided I liked the look of Collage Landscape with an Info Style of Bottom Bar and the Info Hover mode set to Hide.

My galleries are also set to Collage Landscape. By coincidence the smugmug default happens to have an Info Style of Bottom Bar, but the Hover mode is set to Show. I want Hide, not Show. Especially since I get the tooltip popup that displays the same info. It surprised me I could set the display params for the home page but not do the same for a gallery.

My smugmug is purely for family and friend use so I can live with things the way they are... but it will annoy me :bluduh
