Galleries vs folders

Hi,
It may sound dumb, but what's the difference between a gallery and a folder, as far as SM2 is concerned?
I understand that it's possible to have all kind of photos into one folder and then separate them by smart galleries. In my case, each gallery is in a separate folder ie: 1 folder = 1 gallery. There seems to be more options with the folders.

A folder can contain galleries, folders, and pages.
More than one gallery can be placed in a single folder.
