Customization - All or just one is getting me down!

So I'm finding the limitation of only being able customize all galleries the same way or just one gallery differently to be very frustrating.

What I'm finding is that I may wish to tweak one gallery a certain way - that's fine. but then later I may with to make a global background color change but unless I'm missing something this does not work! All the galleries I've customized for other unrelated reasons are now longer affected by any global changes.

Am I missing something here (I hope I am) if not is this how it is really supposed to work?

Also I wont tell you how many times I've made the mistake of thinking I clicked the this gallery only button only to find out after I had pressed publish now that I in fact hadn't & I've changed everything!!!

If a gallery is custom, changes you make to the customizations for All Galleries wouldn't apply because that custom gallery has been set apart from the rest. If you make a background change under Entire Site, this wouldn't override customizations you've specific for a certain gallery.

When you choose to make a gallery or folder custom, there is a notification that says, "By making this folder/gallery custom, you are separating it from your All Folders/Galleries customizations, and it will no longer inherit customizations made at that level."

If you need anything else, please let us know.

I make every folder custom but "all folders" and "entire site" affects them all. Do the same with
galleries. "all galleries" does flow down. Anything in "just this ..." does apply to only the page. So
you have to be careful what you have highlighted in the flyout.

Yes I know & this is my frustration Wendee... It shouldn't be that making one small customization to a particular gallery means that from then on no future global customization will take effect. It's impossible to keep a sight tidy like that.

For example adding a video block to a particular gallery shouldn't mean that in the future I can no longer globally change the background color of my site but sadly it does!

Maybe there's an element of terminology-confusion here? Video blocks or Videos? I'm just trying to get it straight in by brain, it's late and I need a beer.

So, what I had started doing was if a gallery of a hiking trip I had done had a video I would highlight that video using a video block at the top of the Gallery like this:

    http://guy.smugmug.com/Outdoors-Hikes-Climbs-etc/Mt-Hood-Hikes/McNeil-Point-New-Snow-20131005

If there was no video to highlight I didn't add a video block.

Then today I thought I would see what my sight would look like with a blue instead of green background. Applying the color change to all galleries. However the change only took effect in galleries were I hadn't added the Video Block so now those without video blocks are Blue:

    http://guy.smugmug.com/Outdoors-Hikes-Climbs-etc/Mt-Hood-Hikes/Zigzag-Silcox-Loop-130927

But those with a Video are still green, the only way to change these will be one at a time!

This seems to be a very limiting factor to customization. Making one small change means you can no longer make larger global changes later.

Thanks for that. It's a situation similar to one that I had a while ago. I did suss a simple CSS workaround but I've changed my site since then so I can't just copy/send it. I'll have a dig around tomorrow to see if I've got a copy of the code on my HDD.

This is how it should be. Without it Smugmug is causing all kinds of problems customizing specific galleries.
"entire site" and "all galleries" CSS's should flow down to ALL galleries. Only when the gallery is made custom
the "just this gallery" should be used to override any of the upper level CSS and apply any specific CSS.

It's obvious that Smug does not understand customizing if nothing above doesn't apply. :pissed
You'd have to dupe every piece of CSS from above that would still apply.

So Allen, are you saying SM has it right & my complaint is invalid? I'ts fine if you are, I don't know enough about this to know if what I want is reallly doable or not but it does seems that making these kind of customization changes in new SM is far more limiting than it was on Legacy.

I created a new gallery and uploaded one photo. Made the gallery custom (Just This Gallery). I noticed the words for
share, photo info and download icons. So it is picking up the "all galleries" CSS.

"entire site" logo and menu is there also.

It seems awfully strange & limiting that simply adding a video block to the top of one gallery would mean that gallery can't accept any global changes anymore. I mean, maybe having the option for it not to accept global changes could be handy, but for just the addition of a video block to mean you can't change the bkgrd color?? That's definitely strange. I'd like to hear confirmation that it's really supposed to work that way. Also, are there no per-folder or per-sub-folder global changes? I mean, say you have a whole folder of various hiking galleries. You want them all to have a green bkgrd, while the rest of your site has blue. Can't you do that? I'd have expected that kind of thing to be easy in New Smug. Even in old, you could do that pretty easily.

Sadly no there is no folder or sub folder level customization possible. It's return has been asked for but no joy or update yet. It was something I used a lot in Legacy.
