Comparing Google Analytics vs SmugMug stats has me scratching my head...on the same days Google shows there have been no visitors to my site, SmugMug stats shows hundreds of photo views.

Anyone else ever notice this phenomenon?

One issue (unless I'm missing something) is that SM shows image views, and Googles shows at the lowest page views. I've never gotten a good handle on what SM goes and doesn't; I've heard they don't count owner (i.e. logged in) views at all, but not sure what kind of images count, e.g. do Collage thumbnails? A cycling slide show that runs for hours? I also don't quite know what is a page for Google, e.g. if you are in lightboox and hit the right arrow to go through 50 photos, is that still one page in Google but 50 photos in SM?

Mine tracks in some vague fashion, bigger peaks on one are usually a peak on the other, but rarely the same (e.g. the biggest one one will be a minor peak on the other), but that could be pages vs. images.

If there's a good description of how and what SM counts, I'd love to know. It would nice if SM would count at least one statistic that is the same and could be compared, just to make it a bit more believable.

Also, you might want to see this:

Note I can't compare to Google because I had Google set to the domain without the WWW, and was pushed by SM to delete and redo with WWW, so I have no significant pre-new-SM history.

We don't count page views, but photo views. And those photo views don't take into account how a photo was viewed. So views from photos embedded on blogs, forums etc also count in stats while Google won't be able to track those and search on www.smugmug.com will also result in photo views as photos are viewed when folks look through search results.

    Morning All,
Is there a way to block my IP in SM as in G Analytics and Statcounter??
