Android Smugmug App Question - partial deletes

I like the new Android app, I use it frequently to quickly show people recent shots. My card started filling up, and I decided to delete some of the older galleries from the app.
That's covered in the documentation, I think. I went through and de-selected the galleries I did not want. No problem. Then....
Well, first I tried doing nothing, hoping it would automatically purge over night (it did not).
So I looked in the documentation, and it said you have to delete all your images. Huh?
But I did, thinking maybe it was worded strangely. But it wasn't - it literally deleted all my images.
Then the next night, the ones still checked were re-downloaded.
So it worked just fine. Except -- to delete 2-3 Gigabytes of 12 gigabytes, you have to delete 12 then re-download 10? That seems, to say the least, wasteful.
Did I miss a button or step? Or is that the only way to trim the galleries you want?

Glad I don't pay by the gigabyte.
Thanks.
