Watermark's not working properly

I just seem to keep finding problems since migrating to the new site style. I noticed yesterday that the watermark I usually use is no longer listed when I select watermark. All my galleries with it still have it applied though. Those galleries that have the watermark now show as not having a watermark in the gallery settings so there is no way to remove the watermark. I recreated the watermark and applied it to a new gallery, but since there is no longer a collect option, I had to move some images into a new folder for a media request. When I move images to the new folder, they retained the old watermark and now there is no way to remove it inside SmugMug? Not having the collect function anymore is a huge pain in the arse! I've been with SmugMug for 7 years and I think it's finally to move on since they cannot seem to fix the issues.

Sorry to hear you're having problems with watermarking. You can remove watermarks from existing photos in organize > organize size; select the gallery and click the wrench icon > watermarking. Select "remove", select all photos and click "watermark".
You can still collect photos - click the share icon below a photo > collect.
If you're still having issues with watermarks, email us at the help desk with links to galleries in question, and we'll be happy to take a look.

Having any kind of watermarking function under "organize" just seems bizarre. You can tell how many people would agree by the number of people asking here on the forums how to do it. There's just no way people would normally think of this as an 'organize" function, but rather as an "appearance" function or something else. As far as "collect"... I imagine what offcamber is frustrated over is the inability (in New Smug) to collect a bunch of photos at once. From what I understand, they now need to be collected one at a time, which is ridiculous. Note to offcamber though: I think I saw a workaround for this; maybe someone else will comment.

Also, you did not address two of the problems this person mentioned: 1. The watermark they usually use is no longer listed when he/she selects "watermark". 2. The galleries show in settings as not having a watermark. Maybe these things will be addressed by their going to a different spot to do watermarking, but it's very frustrating to me that SmugMug simply is not explaining the watermarking procedures well. No one addresses the very thing that is constantly tripping people up: That it appears you can do watermarking tasks in Settings (i.e. the options are there) and yet, the heroes are always telling people not to do it there, but to do it in "organize" instead, a place where no one will think to look for watermarking.

Could you all put your heads together and find a way to tell us WHY it's only able to be done in one of the two places it appears you can do it? And then please suggest a fix to SmugMug that makes the correct info and correct options obvious within the various tools. Don't y'all get a little tired explaining this anyway? If watermarking can't or shouldn't be done in settings, this needs to be made clear to all of your users by either removing the option or putting in an explanation of why / when / how it's OK to use that particular method.

    Hi Anna,
The OP didn't include any link to their site so it's very difficult to troubleshoot. That's why Ana suggested that if they're still having an issue, to contact the HelpDesk with details.

In regards to what you bring up, the gallery settings watermarking setting only applies to future upload to a gallery. It doesn't affect existing photos in a gallery. To watermark existing photos in a gallery, you have to use the organize site > wrench button > watermarks tool.

While it's true that gallery settings are accessible from the gallery itself and from the organize site screen, giving all the options may be confusing at times. And the organize site screen is in most cases much faster as you can easily go from gallery to gallery with a few clicks and without you having to wait for pages to reload. It's also a central hub for any kind of organizing, arranging etc. of photos, galleries and folders.

Is there not still a checkbox in "Settings" where you tick off the option (or not) to watermark existing photos? In Legacy, there is. I thought the Settings choices had not effectively changed. So If not, why not? And if so, why is it there if it doesn't work? --Anna Lisa

    Hi Anna Lisa,
In the New SmugMug, watermarking of existing photos is exclusively done from the wrench button > watermarks tool in the organize site screen for a gallery. There is no other way.

Maybe I wasn't asking this question the right way, or maybe I'm asking the wrong question. It's just that I see a LOT of questions and confusion about watermarking here on the forum. There have always been a number of things that get people confused about it, even those who've been around a long time. But there's a different kind of confusion now. So I'm just trying to get to the bottom of what it is that's confusing people now, in New Smug.

In other words, there's evidently SOMEthing in gallery settings (& I don't know which dialogue box, as I know there's more than one) that people are seeing & thinking they can use it to accomplish such-and-such with watermarking. But whatever they're using, it's not doing what they expect. So they come here, & the heroes always say to use the wrench / organize thing. That's fine... I guess.. (although it still seems very counter-intuitive to go to "organize" for water-marking) But that aside... I just think SmugMug needs to listen to all these questions and take a look at the new settings boxes, every iteration of them, and find out where people are getting tripped up. Something evidently needs to be spelled out better in those Settings dialogues.

And also, if watermarking still un-does the crop on a thumb, that should get noted somewhere in the thumb-crop dialogue, as it's another thing that people are often not aware of, & then they wonder what happened to their crop.

The problem I'm having with watermarks is that I used to have differently placed marks. When I moved to the new site I decided to use one placed in the same corner of all images. I deleted all my watermarks except the one placed in the lower right. I then used the organizer's watermark tool on every single gallery/image to make sure all my images have the same watermark. I also regenerated all my thumbnails from the original square format to actual aspect ratio. I was told this would create new thumbnails with the correct watermark. In all cases the watermark still appears in the wrong place on all older thumbnails and image sizes except for X3, which is the largest size I allow an image to be viewed.

    How can this be fixed?
