How to pose 9 people on a staircase

I've a client that wants 5 adults and 4 teenagers photographed on this staircase (In a restaurant). An anniversary party.
I have no idea how tall anyone is so I'm just trying to start with a shape. I was thinking of the 2 guests of honor, followed by the other 3 adults and the teens in back. If the teens are short I could go 4 - 2 - 3.
Since I have to do this quickly I think I'll ask the client to estimate everyone's height for me. Then I could have a plan I suppose. Anyone have any suggestions?
