Adding a left side bar?

When I try to add a left side bar all I get is a space. I am not seeing the colored background at all. I set the left side bar to "on" in layout, then went to my theme and set the color to #1f2021 and opacity to 80%, but I see no shaded region, just the space. I am also not seeing the side bar block running from top to bottom of the page as it does in other layouts.

I've since turned it off. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?
BTW, I only want it on the homepage if that matters.

Adding the side bar AND seeing the colored background only seems to work if I add it to the entire site.
I have tried adding it to JUST the homepage... the entire site AND using an independent homepage.
I ONLY get a top to bottom sidebar with the background color showing IF I add it to the entire site.

HELLLLLPPPPP!!!!!!

I posted this over on the customization forum and me and another user went round and round trying a way to get it to work and I am stumped...

Being as I was the "round and round" helper-trying, I am so glad you went to Smugmug Help Desk, that was going to be my next idea.

Well that would have been all good, but the help desk kicked me back to the forum saying my question was to specific as to customization and it needed to be answered here.
I thing someone there helped 1st though because I got the colored background... not sure how... but now I'm not sure I really want it... I have to play with colors to see if I can get one I like.

I have no idea what's new today compared to the other days. All I know is it worked when I logged in on my work computer today.
I see nothing changed in my settings.ne_nau.gif

Any thoughts on the new homepage layout?

I don't think I remember your old homepage layout but - but this one is simple and clean.
If I'm honest here, though, the left sidebar different color bothers me.
I think it wouldn't bother me if it filled the entire vertical space of the entire page. Instead, it's just a box that the navbar sits in.

I actually don't know why that color box is just that box size. On my homepage, which currently has color for the left sidebar, the color does extend all the way down to the bottom of the page, as far down as there is content in the middle (which currently is thumbnails of all the folders). So your slideshow fills a lot of space - so why isn't the color on the left extending at least that far down? Maybe slideshows register differently???

I'm uncertain whether I want the color on my page - it looks a bit - how do I say this - unsophisticated and crude? Something that could help is setting the transparency so that the texture comes through. Right now I see no texture, but I do see it in the main body of your site.

A slight sideways step: I clicked on your galleries to see if there was color on the left on them, and by accident hovered over your top navbar. I was immediately confused by the appearance of a link that seemed to come out of nowhere and be unrelated to anything. I moved my mouse around a bit and finally deduced that I was looking at your sub-menu links. The background color of the submenu links is SO close to the main background, that it kind of sets one up to not realize the relationship between the submenu and the main menu. I understand some people like complete transparency, and you don't have that, but for some reason this strikes me as more confusing than it should be. Here's a snippet of what I see.

This snippet doesn't seem confusing when I look at it like this, so maybe it has to do with the fade-in delay. I wasn't paying attention to the navbar, my mouse just moved across the screen and the (submenu) link "appeared".

Ignore any of this, I may be tired.

I agree with the sidebar color... I do not understand why it only runs under the nav section and not the full height of the page...

Even if it did run full height I'm not sure I'd like the color eitherne_nau.gif
I have to 1st figure out why it only runs that short span and then play with color choices vs no color at all...

I used the sidebar on another site w/ a full page image on the homepage and that image coupled w/ the opacity setting made for a nice effect... I'm not sure about using it w/ the texture only background.headscratch.gif

As for the interior nav... aaaahhhh... I just like it that way.... thanks for your input though.

BTW... that side bar is still not really working correctly... not only does it not run the full height, but it has been pinned and it still moves.ne_nau.gif

"Fill height" made it fill top to bottom... I missed that one...
I also added a left shadow... check it out. I think it spices it up a bit and separates the colors nicely...ne_nau.gif
