I am always a fan of these. Thanks for sharing Tony!
I wasn't there, so you kinda have to be willing to let your vision get away from the final product. I think you did a great job, Tony. I like the original. My way isn't the right way. It is just a way...
* I thought the subject needed some isolation and focus. I tried to simulate this, but you never really can. It always ends up looking a little odd. You just have to shoot it that way, and that isn't always possible.
* I like dark/contrasty - so yeah - I let it fly.
* Crushed the blacks, because see above.
* I'm a sucker for red, so this had to be color for me.
* Needed some grit - but I didn't want to overdo it. Hopefully that came through with a full bucket of mid-range contrast, etc.
* Played with the light. These days I don't have to accept the light. I usually do, but you don't have to.
* Muted colors a bit to bring out the red (see point about me being a sucker).
Only used Lr. No third-party plugins, etc. No presets.
Please feel free to post any reworks you do of my images. Crop, skew, munge, edit, share. Website | Galleries | Utah PJs
You've done a good color rendition, Ryan. However, I like this image in black
and white. It isn't, to me, about color. It's about the piano player and the
scene.
What I do like about yours is the induced depth of field change.
Molsondog doesn't care for my processing in black and white, and I'm sure
some others might not either. I happen to like that style for this type of
image. The starker black and white (which I tried) just doesn't work for me.
You (or anyone else) want to take a crack at a different black and white
treatment?

I don't have a problem with BW. There's just something about the conversion that doesn't sit right. Did you add some other elements?

I understood that you approve of black and white, but that you don't particularly
like my rendition. A comment, by the way, that doesn't bother me at all. We all
have our likes and dislikes about processing results.
I don't know what you mean by (adding) elements. I process the RAW file in
CS6 as a color file, and then go to a black and white conversion pre-set in Nik
Silver Efex Pro that I've adjusted to my own taste. Sometimes I further tweak
that tweaked pre-set.
While I like my version, I'm always interested in what others would do to the
same image. There's a link here to the RAW file if you want to give it a shot.

I'll do better than that. Here's the RAW file. Edit it any way you
want, but include in your reply what you processed it with and
what steps.
Anyone else that wants to show their version is welcome to do so.
