Newbie needs help understanding UNLISTED and PASSWORDS

I just came over from FLICKR and really like the options I have with SmugMug. I'm a novice photographer who wants to share my full site with 100 friends and family (at this point I have several folders containing 8-10 galleries in total). I am confused by the best way to do this.

What I want: I email people my site URL. They go to it, enter the password, and see everything on my site. I'd like my homepage to be viewable/searchable at a public level so friends can find it again in the future and log in again, with the password.

What I don't understand:
Do I make all the folders and galleries UNLISTED? And require a password? How do those two things fit together?
Do I use ShareGroup? I haven't seen a good explanation for how these all fit together so am grateful any explanations. I've read threads here saying to take the BROWSE feature off one's site as another option.

The site is ready to share with friends and family but I don't understand the security and access options. Please answer soon -- would love to resolve by tomorrow to send out in time for US Thanksgiving.

If you set a site level password and you want your viewers to see the galleries they should be set to public. Unlisted galleries are only accessible if the viewer is given the full URL to the gallery.
